A Message From Our President

When Agnes Scott was founded in 1889 it was unusual for a woman to pursue a college degree; today the number of women on university campuses outnumbers men.

Some would say flourishing coeducation on America’s campuses blunts the purpose of women’s colleges. But evidence repeatedly shows that single-sex education creates and strengthens leaders and supports academic achievement and success. A women’s college shapes lives in ways that coeducation does not.

As fall term begins at Agnes Scott, I am excited about the wonderful possibilities the college offers our students, whose hometowns range from St. Mary’s, Ga., to Durban, South Africa. As a college we believe in scholarly excellence, diversity, academic integrity, and the liberal arts tradition. Our smaller student body ensures an enviable student-faculty ratio, which gives you an opportunity to work closely with faculty committed to helping you make the most of a challenging academic environment. Our student-run Honor Code is a proud tradition reaching back to 1905.

Our professors make a difference
I encourage you to meet our professors, starting here, in our faculty section. Our academic program includes 32 majors and options for graduate and post-baccalaureate study. Also, we believe study abroad is more than enjoyable—it’s critical to understanding an increasingly connected and intricate world. Nearly 50 percent of our students study beyond the states before graduating. Our Office of International Education works to make the experience as rewarding and meaningful as possible.

Atlanta—a great place to live while you learn
In admission you can discover why U.S. News and World Report ranks us among the top 10 liberal arts colleges in the South, and a “best value”nationally—number 30 among colleges in the country to achieve this ranking. Agnes Scott has previously been named number two in the nation for "Most Beautiful Campus" by the Princeton Review. The campus’ 100 shaded acres are about five miles from Atlanta’s city center. Public transportation runs a few blocks from campus, connecting our students to a lively metropolitan area which prides itself on the arts, entertainment, professional sports and more than 40 institutions of higher learning. Its business community is one of the strongest in the southeast and is home to several Fortune 500 companies.

And while our architecture is Collegiate Gothic, our 21st-century library, campus center, dining hall and observatory reflect a recent $120 million investment in our facilities. Our integrated science center for psychology, biology, chemistry and physics opened January 2003.

Agnes Scott has grown to meet the frontiers of science while staying deeply rooted in a tradition of moral and ethical commitment instilled by its founders. That special blend of cutting-edge teaching and learning and timeless values is one of several dualities that make this college so special. If you find this combination attractive, I invite you to visit Agnes Scott and see for yourself what we have to offer—we are eager to welcome you!
